What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

Partial Hospitalization (PHP) is highly structured form of outpatient treatment. This level of care involves programming 5 days per week and is best suited for individuals who have completed detox and residential treatment, but are not ready be on their own or attend an less structured level of care such as Intensive Outpatient (IOP).

Our PHP program includes the following:

  • Programming 5 days per week
  • Individual therapy 2 times per week
  • Daily group therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
  • Holistic Therapies such as music and art therapy

Partial hospitalization works as the next step in recovery after detox and residential treatment. Or, as the first step in recovery for individuals who don’t require detox or residential treatment for any reason.

In cases where someone has completed detox and residential treatment, a partial program allow them to slowly begin integrating back into family or social life without giving up the structured support that might be necessary at this stage. Clients attending PHP are required to participate in 6 hours of programming per day and return home at night, which offers them the chance to reintegrate into family units and begin to work on living their new, sober lifestyle.

In some cases, PHP may be the first step in recovery. It is highly structured and allows you attend treatment daily without being away from your family or home for an extended period, which may be helpful for some individuals. If the stress of being away from home — or the need to restructure an entire family to do so — would put your recovery at risk, PHP could be an appropriate option.

While partial hospitalization is highly structured and includes a full programming schedule, residential treatment offers a few things that aren’t possible in outpatient levels of care. First, residential treatment lets you take a break, which can be important if your environment plays a role in your addiction. Second, depending on your situation, you may require 24 hour medical and clinical supervision. At Peace Valley, our admissions process involves a thorough screening to determine whether or not you are appropriate for our facility. In cases where a potential client requires a higher level of care prior to admitting, we will provide a list of qualified providers as options and help coordinate this referral.

While attending our partial program, you will take part in structured programming 5 days per week, 6 hours each day. This programming will include individual, group, and holistic therapies such as yoga and music. We will work with you to understand your addiction and help you develop coping mechanisms. If you are experiencing mental health issues related to your drug or alcohol addiction, such as anxiety or depression, those will be addressed by your primary therapist. When appropriate, family therapy is encouraged, and as you approach completion, we will work with you to create an aftercare plan that supports continued sobriety.
